Ode to Greece

Ancient history, rich culture, and hundreds of exotic and gorgeous islands and beaches are a few of Greece’s attractions. Here is a brief run down on where you can get a taste of each of these and more!

Achillion Palace in Corfu Greece

A fascinating thing about Greece is the way the ancient and the modern coexist so beautifully. Perhaps no place embodies this spirit as much as Athens.  At once cutting edge and steeped in history, Athens is full of things to see and do.

One of the first things you will notice about Athens is that the historic area has been closed to auto traffic. If you don’t pay attention to the phones and clothes, you can almost picture the city as it was many years ago.

But antiquity and modernity coexist even here. You can visit the ruins of the Acropolis, and then visit the Acropolis museum. This modern structure houses more than 4000 ancient artifacts. From here you can enter the Plaka neighborhood. This charming area has been inhabited from ancient times until the present day.

Visit Zeus’ Temple, Hadrian’s Arch, and Dionysus’ Theatre. You won’t see any plays there anymore, but the annual Athens festival is held at the nearby Odeon of Herodes.

Venture out of the historic center, and there is still so much to see and do. When your family takes your cheap holidays to Greece, you will surely need to visit the suburb of Piraeus. Poseidon’s Temple is here which is certainly worth a visit as well as the Marathon monuments.

There is so much to see and do in Athens, this is just the tip of the iceberg. But if you want to explore more of the country, you couldn’t do much better than to visit Crete.

The largest island of Greece, and the fifth largest Mediterranean Island, Crete will take your breath away. Visit the ruins of Knossos, the ancient Minoan Palace. Then head over to the Iraklio Archaeological Museum, where you will find artifacts from Knossos. Many of the frescoes you will find at the museum come from the palace.

Need a break from all this sightseeing? Plan a visit one of Crete’s beautiful beaches. No Greece Holidays could be complete without some time relaxing on the sand. Looking to combine some more sightseeing with your beach time? Then start at Frangokastello. This beautiful beach also hosts an old Venetian Palace.

Another must see destination is Ithaca. Most famous to us mythology lovers for being the home of Odysseus, Ithaca does not disappoint with its marvelous historic structures and breathtaking beaches. If you enjoy diving, you can even become a part of the story. Take a trip to the Cave of the Nymphs, and see if you can find Odysseus’ hidden treasure.

With so much to see and do, Greece remains an amazing travel destination. Just be careful or you might never want to return home from your Greece Holidays.
