My Heathrow Hideaway

The Master Robert Hotel

The fun thing about staying at The Master Robert Hotel is since it hosts so many fabulous events like weddings and graduations, it’s easy to get swept up in somebody’s party and wind up having a smashing evening! The in-house traditional English pub is an excellent place to rub some elbows and sometimes, some sweetheart invites me to a white linen dinner in the paneled restaurant next door. The warm, clean rooms are surprisingly quiet considering how close it is to Heathrow and the delicious free breakfast makes waking up a treat. Since it’s located right on the Great West Road (A4) with a bus stop out front, I can spend some time playing tourist and visiting my favorite London spot, Royal Botanic Kew Gardens, where the seasonal festivities are always charming and provoke flashes of childhood nostalgia.

My London Stansted Secret

The holiday Inn express

Even though they offer a shuttle bus, since the The Express by Holiday Inn is only a £7.00 taxi fare from the London Stansted Airport, I sometimes justify a little splurge, especially since I know how reasonable the room rates are at this surprisingly upscale hotel. This is one of those places where I just love to sequester myself in my cozy room, enjoy a long power shower in that bathroom with frameless shower doors and curl up with a fresh cuppa from my private little coffee/tea station with quality mugs from this website. I also take advantage of their laundry facilities and take care of any mundane tasks at their convenient business center. But I must admit my favorite part is partaking in the free Continental breakfast in the Great Room that I carry back to my room and enjoy in exquisite privacy. When I’ve had enough “quiet time” I splurge on another 5 mile taxi ride to historic Great Dunmow where I feel like I’ve stepped back in time.

My Gatwick Getaway

Cumberland House

Honestly, I’ve been known to tweak my schedule just so I can spend some quality time in the homey atmosphere of the Cumberland House. I feel like I’m visiting Grandma’s when I check into this sweet bed and breakfast where the gingerbread-house style rooms have giant stuffed animals waiting to be cuddled. The way the owners, Carmel and Clive, fuss me to make sure I’m comfortable and have everything I want for breakfast gives me that warm fuzzy feeling that is hard to find in today’s impersonal hotels. They happily come transfer me back and forth from airport (except in the wee hours, of course, they have to sleep!) and I’ve become quite fond of the surrounding town of Horley where I have wonderful romantic fantasies while roaming the remains of Thunderfield Castle.

Luton Landing Spot

Junction 10 Budget Hostel

Certainly not my favorite London airport, but I’m glad it’s just a five minute ride from the London Luton International Airport to the Junction 10 Budget Hostel. The friendly atmosphere helps soften the landing, especially when I get in late and have an early morning flight. Although dirt cheap, the rooms have comfortable beds with nice linens and clean bathrooms — even the dorm rooms have dividers for extra privacy. The cheerful staff can give you directions to Luton’s city center where a trip to Greggs Bakery satisfies my sweet tooth!
