If you’re after a fun, lively and gay-friendly holiday in the sun then you can’t go wrong with Tenerife. Thanks to recent developments and rejuvenations, areas such as Playa De Las Americas are looking better than ever and the island has seen the value of the pink tourist pound! As a result there are a growing number of inviting gay and gay-friendly bars and nightclubs to party the night away at when you come on holiday here.
There are local gay scenes already thriving in Tenerife’s capital city of Santa Cruz and the university town of La Laguna, with the tourist hotspots of Puerto De La Cruz and Playa De Las Americas attracting a more international gay crowd.
Start off your night at the Playaflor bar and terrace at the Playaflor apartments complex in Playa De Las Americas on the Veronicas strip. This venue is ideal if you’re looking for somewhere to party before 11pm, as most other gay venues on the island don’t liven up until after this time.
You can choose to stay in the apartment complex itself or somewhere alternative nearby, such as La Siesta Hotel, less than half a mile from the main Veronicas strip and not far from several gay bars.
The highest concentration of gay nightspots in Tenerife, and only a short walk away from the Playaflor in Playa De Las Americas, is in the Salytien Shopping Centre on the seafront in Costa Adeje. Come here after Playaflor and start at the British-run Cellar bar, open from 8pm and serving snacks such as hot dogs, then move on to Gemini’s bar at about midnight, known for its fun, cabaret vibe.
Go on to the popular Punto Zero Club from 1am, the biggest and most buzzing of the gay venues here. You can dance the night (or morning) away until closing time at 6am or you can move onto Chaplin’s bar, another lively venue which is open until 8 in the morning but generally gets the most crowds between 3-4am.
Beyond the Salytien Centre, there are plenty of places to enjoy a decent bite to eat the following day. Sugar and Spice in Playa De Las Americas just near the Playaflor complex and Tomillo in neighbouring Los Cristianos are both gay-friendly food venues. Then there’s the Brazilian-themed Agua de Coco Bar, a welcoming, gay-friendly venue also in Los Cristianos.
